Pain is a physical suffering or discomfort caused by an illness or injury.  It may be acute which can be intense and may be an indication of an injury, or chronic, which lasts much longer and can be mild or intense (severe). The most common medication for pain is IP 190, also known as Naproxen 500 mg. They are available over the counter and at a low cost.

 Naproxen Overview

Naproxen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. It is used to treat conditions such as headache, back pain, sciatica, arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, tendinitis, bursitis, gout, or menstrual cramps.

It may be in the form of oral suspension, oral tablet, oral delayed release tablet, oral tablet, extended release, oral capsule, compounding powder, oral and topical kit.

Precautions

Naproxen should not be used by those with asthma and with history of allergic reaction to aspirin or other NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug).

It increases the risk of fatal heart attack or stroke, especially if you use it long term or take high doses, or if you have heart disease. Even people without heart disease or risk factors could have a stroke or heart attack while taking this medicine. Use therefore as prescribed.

This medicine should not be used just before or after heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG).

Naproxen may also cause stomach or intestinal bleeding which can be fatal and occurs without warning.

Seek immediate help with chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, or problems with vision or balance.

Ask a doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant. It may harm the unborn baby if taken during the last 3 months of pregnancy. It may also interfere with ovulation, causing temporary infertility.

Naproxen should not be used when breastfeeding. It can pass into breast milk and may cause side effects to the nursing baby.

It is not approved for use by anyone younger than 2 years old and should not be given to a child without medical advice.

What to avoid while taking Naproxen?

Avoid drinking alcohol as it may increase the risk of stomach bleeding.

Avoid taking aspirin.

Ask your doctor before taking any other medication for pain, arthritis, fever, or swelling. Many medicines available over the counter contain aspirin, salicylates, or other medicines similar to naproxen (such as ibuprofen or ketoprofen). Taking certain products together can cause you to get too much of this type of medication.

Ask your doctor before using antacids; some make it harder for your body to absorb naproxen.

Side Effects

 Common naproxen side effects are indigestion, heartburn, stomach pain, nausea, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, bruising, itching, rash, swelling or ringing in your ears.

Major Side Effects

• Belching
• bruising
• difficult or labored breathing
• feeling of indigestion
• headache
• itching skin
• large, flat, blue, or purplish patches in the skin
• pain in the chest below the breastbone
• skin eruptions
• stomach pain
• swelling
• tightness in the chest

Signs of an allergic reaction are sneezing, runny or stuffy nose; wheezing or trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Signs of a heart attack or stroke include: chest pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder, sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, and feeling short of breath.

Symptoms of Overdose

• Bleeding under the skin
• confusion about identity, place, and time
• muscle tremors
• restlessness
• sleepiness

Your health care professional may be able to help you prevent or reduce naproxen side effects, but do check with them if any of the following side effects continue or if you are concerned about them. It is always best to consult your doctor before taking the medication and take only as prescribed. Immediately call a doctor if severe/major side effects occur.
