IP 203

A white, round pill with imprint “IP 203,” and also known as Acetaminophen and oxycodone hydrochloride 325 mg / 5 mg. It belongs to the drug class narcotic analgesic combinations and is used for the treatment of moderate to severe pain.

Oxycodone is an opioid pain medication otherwise known as narcotic and works in the brain to change how our body feels and responds to pain while acetaminophen is a less potent pain reliever that increases the effects of oxycodone. A combination of both offers better pain relief than the same doses of either medicine alone.

Common side effects of this medication include: headache, drowsiness, tiredness; nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, constipation; blurred vision; or dry mouth. Serious side effects include: shallow breathing, slow heartbeat; a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out; confusion, unusual thoughts or behavior; seizure (convulsions); problems with urination; infertility, missed menstrual periods; impotence, sexual problems, loss of interest in sex; liver problems (nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice) or low cortisol levels (nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dizziness, worsening tiredness or weakness.) Immediately call the doctor with these symptoms as well with agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, shivering, fast heart rate, muscle stiffness, twitching, loss of coordination, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea which are signs of serotonin syndrome.

As a narcotic medicine, oxycodone can slow breathing and in rare occasions cause severe skin reaction even if the medicine has been taken before without any reaction. Stop taking the medicine and call the doctor. If allergic reactions such as hives; difficulty breathing; and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat occur, immediately seek emergency help. Fatal side effects can occur if you use this medicine with alcohol, or with other drugs that cause drowsiness or slow your breathing.

Oxycodone may be habit-forming and misuse can cause addiction, overdose or death. This medicine should only be used as prescribed and by the person it was prescribed for following doctors’ advice.

An overdose of acetaminophen can cause liver damage or even death.  Swallow the pill whole to avoid potentially fatal dose. Discuss with your doctor potential harm this medicine could cause especially if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant. This medicine also passes through breast milk so avoid breastfeeding while on medication.

Tell your doctor if you have allergies and if you are taking other medicines (over-the-counter, vitamins, herbal, etc.) to avoid drug interactions. Ask your doctor how to safely take Acetaminophen and oxycodone hydrochloride and do not immediately stop its use without advice. Also, inform other doctors or dentists you intend to undergo surgery with, that you are taking this medicine.

It is important to remember not to drink alcohol or any alcoholic beverages and to refrain driving or doing activities that require alertness because this can cause dizziness and severe drowsiness. Drinking alcohol alone can cause death. Store the medicine in a safe and secure place and at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
