Overview

Dosage Forms

Alprazolam is available in short-acting tablets, long-acting tablets, oral solution, and orally-dissolving tablets.

Response and Effectiveness

Peak concentrations or duration of effect varies among individuals, weight, formulation, and in people who smoke.  Alprazolam tend to be more effective among Asians, and last longer among obese people.

Peak concentrations – 1-2 hours after taking immediate-release and orally disintegrating tablets

Consistent levels – attained 5 to 11 hours with extended-release forms.

Side Effects

Immediately call for emergency help with the following symptoms:

• depressed mood, thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself;
• racing thoughts, increased energy, unusual risk-taking behavior;
• confusion, agitation, hostility, hallucinations;
• uncontrolled muscle movements, tremor, seizure (convulsions); or
• pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest
• allergic reactions such as hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Some people do not experience below side effects; however, if they persist or become bothersome, call your doctor.

• drowsiness, feeling tired;
• slurred speech, lack of balance or coordination;
• memory problems; or
• feeling anxious early in the morning.

Important information

Consult your doctor with these withdrawal symptoms: blurred vision, insomnia, sweating, and sometimes seizures.

Seek emergency help with these overdose symptoms: extreme drowsiness, confusion, muscle weakness, loss of balance or coordination, feeling light-headed, and fainting.

Do not double dose in case of a missed dose. Immediately take the medicine as soon as you remember and do not take the dose if it is almost time for the next schedule.

Avoid use of this drug with the following:

• if you have narrow-angle glaucoma, if you are taking itraconazole or ketoconazole, or if you are allergic to alprazolam or medicines of the same content
• If you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, and breastfeeding
• do not take with alcohol

Misuse of this drug can cause addiction, overdose, and death.
