A combination of acetaminophen (APAP, paracetamol) and hydrocodone is used to treat moderate to severe pain. Hydrocodone belongs to narcotic pain relievers. Acetaminophen is a milder pain reliever and a fever reducer that increases the effects of hydrocodone.

Possible side effects of acetaminophen and hydrocodone

Signs of allergic reaction include: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.  Serious side effects are the following: shallow breathing, slow heartbeat; feeling light-headed, fainting; confusion, fear, unusual thoughts or behavior; seizure (convulsions);problems with urination; or nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). Immediately call the doctor with these symptoms.

Common side effects are: anxiety, dizziness, drowsiness; mild nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, constipation; headache, mood changes; blurred vision; ringing in your ears; or dry mouth.

Immediately report to your doctor any symptoms not listed above or if the medicine seems to be not working. Some side effects disappear once the body has adjusted to medication. Tell your treating physician if the symptoms continue or if you have unusual reaction to taking this medicine.

In case of a missed dose, do not use extra medicine to cope up with missed medication. Take the medicine as soon as you remember or skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose.

Overdose symptoms may also include extreme drowsiness, pinpoint pupils, cold and clammy skin, muscle weakness, fainting, weak pulse, slow heart rate, coma, blue lips, shallow breathing, or no breathing.  Initial signs are loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, sweating, and confusion or weakness. Later symptoms may include pain in your upper stomach, dark urine, and yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes. In this case, stop taking the medication and immediately seek medical attention.

What to avoid while taking this medication

• Do not drive or do anything that requires you to stay awake and alert. This medicine may impair your thinking or reactions.
• Do not use any other medication while using acetaminophen and hydrocodone to avoid unwanted side effects.
• Avoid drinking alcohol. Alcohol increases the risk of liver damage and increases effects of this medication.
• Do not use if pregnant, planning to get pregnant or breastfeeding. This is harmful to the unborn baby and may cause undesirable effects to a nursing infant.

How to take acetaminophen and hydrocodone

• Take only as prescribed. Follow directions in your prescription label. Do not immediately stop taking this medicine without your doctors’ knowledge. Overdose can harm your liver and misuse can cause harmful effects.
• Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily and add more fiber in your diet to prevent constipation and do not take laxatives or stool softener without first talking to your doctor.

Inform the doctor of any allergies to this medication and if you are currently taking other medicines. Tell your doctor and dentist that you are taking this medicine especially before you undergo surgery.

To avoid unwanted side effects, inform your treating physician of your medical history.

This is not recommended for use in children below 6 years old.

Older adults and children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially slow/shallow breathing, confusion, dizziness, and drowsiness.

Hydrocodone is a drug of abuse, store in a safe place and discard properly when no longer in use.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
