Description

Acetaminophen and hydrocodone bitartrate 325 mg / 7.5 mg is a white, capsule-shaped pill and belongs to the drug class narcotic analgesic combinations (also called opiates, opioid analgesics, or narcotics).

Narcotic analgesic combinations are products that contain a narcotic analgesic with one or more other analgesics, such as acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen. They should only be used to treat moderate-to-severe pain when other less potent analgesics are not effective.

This medication contains opioid (narcotic) pain reliever (hydrocodone) and a non-opioid pain reliever (acetaminophen). Hydrocodone works in the brain to change how your body feels and responds to pain. Acetaminophen can also reduce a fever.

Uses

Acetaminophen/hydrocodone is used to treat back pain, pain, rheumatoid arthritis, cough and many more but not intended for use in children younger than 6 years due to an increased risk of serious side effects such as slow or shallow breathing.

This medicine is an effective combination pain relieving medicine; however, use is limited by the dependence potential of the hydrocodone component and the possibility of liver toxicity with excessive doses of acetaminophen.

Dosing

Acetaminophen / Hydrocodone is available in oral tablet, oral capsule, oral liquid, oral elixir, and oral solution.

The dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and weight in children.

This medicine is taken as needed. In case of a missed dose, take the medicine as soon as you remember. If you are taking this drug regularly and miss the schedule, skip the dose if it is almost time for the next dose. Do not use extra medicine, to make up for a missed dose.

Overdose on acetaminophen and hydrocodone is fatal. Seek emergency help with these symptoms: extreme drowsiness, sweating, pinpoint pupils, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), confusion, cold and clammy skin, muscle weakness, fainting, weak pulse, slow heart rate, coma, blue lips, shallow breathing, or no breathing.

Response and Effectiveness

Peak concentration is usually reached within 1.5 hours. Duration of effect varies among individuals, but, in general, may last from 4 to 6 hours.

Side Effects

In general, seniors or children, people with certain medical conditions or people who take other medications are more at risk of developing a wider range of side effects.

Seek emergency help with serious side effects such as shallow breathing, slow heartbeat, light-headedness, fainting, confusion, fear, unusual thoughts or behavior, seizure (convulsions), problems with urination, nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, itching, dark urine, clay-colored stools, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Allergic reactions are rare; however, get medical help if you experience hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, constipation, headache, mood changes, blurry vision, ringing of ears, and dry mouth may occur. Some do not experience these side effects and for some, symptoms disappear after use over a period of time. Consult your doctor if symptoms persist or if you experience other symptoms that may seem unusual or bothersome.

Warnings

Inform the doctor if you have allergies to acetaminophen and hydrocodone or other opioids.

Tell the doctor your medical history or if you are taking other medicines (over-the-counter, prescribed medicines, herbal products, vitamins, etc.)

This drug causes drowsiness and dizziness. Avoid alcoholic beverages and avoid driving or operating machineries or doing activities that require alertness.

Inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medicine before taking other medicines or before undergoing surgery.

Caution is advised for use with children for risk of slow/shallow breathing and older adults for accidents/falls, dizziness, confusion, and drowsiness.

Discuss the risks and benefits when taking this medicine during pregnancy or if you plan to get pregnant. Do not use this medicine when breastfeeding.

Hydrocodone may be habit-forming, keep in a secure place away from others.

This medicine causes constipation, drink 6 to 8 full glasses of water and increase fiber in diet. Avoid use of laxative or stool softeners without doctor’s advice.

Store acetaminophen and hydrocodone at room temperature away from moisture and heat and discard properly if no longer in use.
