Pill imprint Watson 349 has been identified as Acetaminophen/Hydrocodone. This combination is used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain and belongs to the drug class narcotic analgesic combinations.

Acetaminophen is a mild pain reliever which enhances the effects of hydrocodone and a fever reducer at the same time. Its mechanism of action is not known but it is believed to block a specific type of cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzyme, located mainly in the brain. Hydrocodone on the other hand, helps relieve severe ongoing pain and stops or relieves cough. It binds to opioid receptors that block pain signals on their way to the brain. This drug combination is effective than either drug alone and helps relieve rheumatoid arthritis, joint pains, back pain, cough, and some other pain and health conditions.

This medicine is available only with doctor’s prescription.

Dosage

This medicine is available in tablet and oral solution forms, as well as cost-saving generic versions.

The amount of medicine depends on the strength of the medicine, current condition of the patient, and weight in children.

Number of doses and interval of taking this medicine depends on the medical problem for which this medicine is used.

In case of a missed dose, take the medicine as soon as you remember. Do not double dose. Skip the schedule if it is almost time to take the next dose.

Seek emergency help in case of an overdose. Symptoms include: extreme drowsiness, sweating, pinpoint pupils, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, confusion, cold and clammy skin, muscle weakness, fainting, weak pulse, slow heart rate, coma, blue lips, and shallow breathing or no breathing.

Response and Effectiveness

Peak concentrations usually reached within 1.5 hours. Duration of effect varies among individuals, but, in general, may last from 4 to 6 hours. Only take as directed by your doctor.

Proper Use

This medicine should only be used by the person it was prescribed for and taken exactly as directed. This medicine is habit-forming and can cause addiction, overdose, and even death.

This product is not intended for use by children younger than 6 years old due to risk of slow/shallow breathing.

Measure liquid form of this medicine with a measuring spoon, cup, oral syringe or dropper. The average household table spoon may not give the correct measurement.

Side Effects

 Anxiety, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, constipation, headache, mood changes, blurry vision, dry mouth, and ringing of the ears may occur. Consult the doctor if these symptoms do not go away or if they are bothersome.

Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: mental/mood changes such as agitation, confusion, hallucinations, stomach/abdominal pain, difficulty urinating, signs of your adrenal glands not working well such as loss of appetite, unusual tiredness, weight loss.

Get medical help with these very serious side effects: fainting, seizure, slow/shallow breathing, and severe drowsiness/difficulty waking up.

Seek emergency help with these rare allergic reactions such as rash; itching; swelling of the face, tongue, and throat; severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.

Warnings

Allergies

Tell the doctor if you have unusual allergic reaction to acetaminophen/hydrocodone or other medicines and substances.

Pediatric

Use with caution among children for risk of slow or shallow breathing. Safety and efficacy for use of this medicine have not been established in children younger than 2 years of age.

Geriatric

Use with caution among elderly and those with medical conditions and taking medicines for risk of slow/shallow breathing and age-related liver, lung, kidney, and heart problems. This medicine causes drowsiness, dizziness, and confusion. Older adults are at risk for accident and falls.

Pregnancy

Acetaminophen/hydrocodone may harm the unborn baby and may cause withdrawal symptoms in newborns. Inform the doctor if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant.

Breastfeeding

This combination medicine passes through breast milk. Discuss with your doctor if you are to breastfeed or take the medicine.

Drug Interaction

Excessive dose of acetaminophen can harm the liver.

Tell the doctor your medical history and the medicines you are taking which includes prescription/non-prescription drugs, vitamins, supplements, and herbal products.

Other Warnings

• Do not drink alcoholic beverages while taking this medication. It can cause toxic effects and add to the effects of acetaminophen/hydrocodone.
• This drug can be habit-forming and can be abused. Store in a safe place away from others. Distribution of this medicine is against the law.
• If you feel the medicine is not working, inform your doctor. Do not use more than what is prescribed.
• Check with your doctor if pain and side effects don’t go away. Inform the doctor if you feel you may be addicted to this medicine.

• Acetaminophen/hydrocodone combination causes constipation. Exercise, increase fiber in diet and increase your water intake from 6 to 8 full glasses daily to minimize this side effect.
• Tell the doctor/dentist you are taking this medicine before taking laboratory tests, undergoing other treatment, surgery or dental extraction.
• Do not suddenly change your dose or stop taking the medication without your doctor’s advice.

Storage

Store in a closed container, at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight.

Keep out of reach of children and pets.
