How it works

Acetaminophen/hydrocodone is a combination of two different pain-relief medicines with two different mechanisms of action. Acetaminophen, though not sure how it works, experts say, it blocks a specific enzyme in the brain. Hydrocodone on the other hand, binds to opioid receptors that block pain signals on their way to the brain.

Overview

This medicine is a white, oblong, scored tablet imprinted with “IP 110” and belongs to the drug class narcotic analgesic combinations.

Narcotic analgesic (also known as opiates, opioid analgesics, or narcotics) combinations are products that contain a narcotic analgesic with one or more other analgesics, such as acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen. They should only be used to treat moderate-to-severe pain when other less potent analgesics are not effective.

They are used to treat back pain; pain; rheumatoid arthritis; cough; and many others. They are very effective at relieving pain; however, they can cause addiction, dependence, and tolerance with increasing doses to relieve pain.

Side Effects

Immediately call your doctor or seek emergency help with these symptoms:

Allergic reactions

• hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Serious side effects

• shallow breathing, slow heartbeat;
• feeling light-headed, fainting;
• confusion, fear, unusual thoughts or behavior;
• seizure (convulsions);
• problems with urination; or
• nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, itching, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Overdose

• extreme drowsiness, sweating, pinpoint pupils, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), confusion, cold and clammy skin, muscle weakness, fainting, weak pulse, slow heart rate, coma, blue lips, shallow breathing, or no breathing.

Common side effects don’t normally require medical attention unless the symptoms continue, or are unusual, and/or bothersome. As the body adjusts to treatment, these signs usually just go away. Discuss with your doctor ways to minimize these side effects:

• feeling anxious, dizzy, or drowsy;
• mild nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, constipation;
• headache, mood changes;
• blurred vision;
• ringing in your ears; or
• dry mouth.

Important Information

Misuse of this drug can cause harmful side effects. Tell your doctor the following:

• allergies to acetaminophen or hydrocodone, and other drugs
• some other allergies
• medical history (past and present illnesses or diseases)
• medicines taken (prescription/non-prescription drugs, vitamins, herbal medicines, etc.)
• if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant or breastfeeding
• if you intend to take new medicines or undergo surgery

Take only as prescribed and follow directions and doctor’s advice with use.

Hydrocodone may be habit forming. Do not suddenly stop taking this medication or increase/decrease your dosage without doctor’s advice. This can result to fatal side effects. This should only be used by the person it was prescribed for.

This medicine can impair your thinking and reactions. Avoid driving or operating machineries and activities that require you to be awake and alert.

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking acetaminophen and hydrocodone. Alcohol may increase your risk of liver damage while taking acetaminophen.

Drink 6 to 8 full glasses of water daily to help prevent constipation. Increase fiber in diet and avoid use of laxatives or stool softeners without your doctor’s knowledge.

Store in a secure place away from pets, children and possible use of other persons. Do not distribute this drug as this is against the law.

Discard properly when the medicine is expired or no longer in use.

Response and Effectiveness

Peak concentrations is usually reached within 1.5 hours. Duration of effect varies among individuals, but, in general, may last from 4 to 6 hours. Only take as directed. Tell your doctor if the medicine doesn’t seem to work or if you think you have become addicted to this drug combination.
